Mountainous areas in Corsica

Did you know that? Of all the Mediterranean islands, Corsica holds the record for the highest average altitude, with 120 peaks exceeding 2000 metres. Often covered with snow in winter, they offer breathtaking panoramas, the mineral ridges and peaks competing for the green of the scrub before rushing into the great Blue.
From the highest altitudes, such as Monte Cinto to the most modest, the Corsican massifs offer ever-changing panoramas: views of lakes, mountains and valleys or the vastness of the sea.
The Corsican mountains also bear witness to the island’s past, criss-crossed by mule tracks that will take you from a water source to a sheepfold or a cottage.
Because there is no shortage of activities: hiking, whitewater sports, paragliding or mountain biking,… the range of possibilities is as dizzying as the peaks you are about to explore. Among the many peaks, do not miss the Uomo di Cagna and the Incudine World in southern Corsica, or the Rotondu and its mountain lakes in the centre of the island.

Corte and the centre of the island

At the confluence of the Tavignano and Restonica rivers, Corte is perched at an altitude of 450 metres and overlooked by its citadel, the “eagle’s nest”, perched on a rocky peak. The cultural and historical capital of Corsica enjoys a central position on the island, halfway between Bastia and Ajaccio.
It was in the 18th century that Pascal Paoli declared it the capital of Corsica, then independent.
A lively student city, Corte is home to a university and an important regional museum of anthropology in Corsica. Climbing up its belvedere you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city as well as the valleys of Tavignanu and Restonica.
The centre of Corsica offers you magnificent hikes, such as the one that will take you to Lake Nino from the Col de Vergio, or the one on Lake Creno, covered with water lilies.
